Bonding

  • When you first get your new friend home, talk to them often so they can learn your voice. If you have a shirt or towel you don't need, you can put it in their cage for them to get your scent (it also gives them a comfy spot to lay).

  • Approach your rabbit cage slowly, especially in the beginning.

  • Give them small treats to help them get used to you. Who doesn't like friends who bring them food!

  • Getting down to their level makes it less stressful for them. You can also pet your rabbit to calm him/her down.

  • When you're ready to hold them, say down on their level, scoop him/her up by placing a hand under the torso and pull your bunny close to your body.

  • Continue to support their hindquarters to keep your bunny safe and speak to them quietly. They may squirm, if so continue to hold them securely to you.

  • Put him/her back in the cage the same way your lifted them out. They may respond with a thump but it's nothing personal.

  • Spend time with your rabbit every day and you will quickly gain a new best friend!
